Raincliff, September 10-12 2010
** CANCELLED DUE TO CANTERBURY EARTHQUAKE. NEW DATE WILL BE
ADVISED**
We've been to South Canterbury in 2005 and 2006 so thought it was time to revisit this area. We are based at Raincliff, an idyllic spot adjacent to the Opihi River in the rolling hill country between Geraldine and Fairlie.
Accommodation
Is in the Raincliff Scout Lodge, Gudex Road (intersection Gudex/Middle Valley,
Spur, and Raincliff Roads) It is approx. 10 km from state highway 79. Turnoff
is about 30 km from Geraldine, see map below. The lodge has good facilities, but will need to bring sleeping bag and your own pillow. Price $12 per night. Bedrooms are bunkroom style (all upstairs) but there are a number of rooms ... there will be plenty of space. There is a
common room / dining area on the ground floor where we can all get together. The kitchen is well equipped with adequate fridge space, a couple of ovens, and cooking and eating utensils.
Hot showers and yes flush toilets (just incase anyone was wondering if we had to rough it Scout camping style!). Please pay the treasurer.
What to take
Food to share for pot luck tea Saturday night, and maybe if you arrive early in the day on Friday, something for Friday night’s tea.
Please check the
standard weekend gear check list.
Things to do
Many and varied. Good vantage points for sun rises. Limestone buildings. Some quirky bits and pieces. Spring flowers could be a possibility in one or two places (willows were shooting when reccy was done on the 21st August). Landscapes galore. Limestone country. Spring lambs and anything else you can find. There is a winery not far away which we can have a look at. There are a couple of wet land areas where there are a lot of pukekos, and other birds.
