Trip report

We met at the Peel Forest Eco Lodge – initially 5 of us, Rowan Emberson and Pol Syrett, Ken and Kathy Muscroft –Taylor, and me (Maureen) on Friday night and enjoyed investigating eco-life with a coal range, solar water heating, and composting toilets. With so few of us we had our own rooms, and plenty of room to spread out. Sue Blair arrived the following morning, and the 6 of us set off into the forest. Being photographers keeping together wasn’t a strong point, but there was plenty to keep everyone busy as we meandered along the bush tracks. After meeting up for lunch we went up the waterfall trail and to Emily Falls (Rata Falls is for next time!).

Interesting night on Saturday night, as (luckily) after we had enjoyed our shared dinner, the generator failed and the lights went out! Thank goodness for the coal range and wood burner. The generator was fixed the next morning by the owner with help from Ken and Rowan. Then we packed and made our way to the river, through numerous small fords (thanks to Ken for his local knowledge). We found Pol some paniculata low enough down for a tripod, and then headed to the Orari River for lunch, after which we wended our way home. A very enjoyable trip, and thanks to Pol for the organisation, and to everyone for their company and input.
