Rainbow Road Trip 20th-22nd January
Trip report: Alannah Matches
Throughout Friday afternoon the 4WD’s gathered at Lake Tennyson
(Right). A tent village popped up as we each selected our
preferred and, possibly, sheltered site. Hopes for some glorious
sunset shots were dashed by lack of cloud but nevertheless everhopeful
photographer’s re-appeared in the pre-dawn light.
Again no significant cloud but some beautiful morning light defined
the hill slopes and later warmed chilled frames.
The day’s journey, as we topped Island and later followed
the Wairau River was spectacular – The black bare mountains,
the deep gashes of gullies and the gathering momentum
of the Wairau (Left). Personal highlights were Lake
Sedgemere and, shortly after, the wetland area. The glorious
colours of the water, the sky and the plant life were a photographer’s
delight. For sub-alpine enthusiasts Rod Morris’s
Knowledge of the plants and creatures we were photographing
was an extra bonus, especially his account of the
giant cave weta and the Gordian worm!
That evening we enjoyed a delicious meal together at St Arnaud’s
Alpine Lodge and excellent accommodation at nearby Nelson
Lakes Motels. Sadly next morning Lake Rotoiti was shrouded in rain
and so we took our separate routes home.
Thank you, Carl and Rod, for memorable weekend.
